Tharaka University (TUN) Vice Chancellor and CEO, Prof. Peter K. Muriungi, yesterday joined fellow Vice Chancellors of public universities at State House Nairobi, in a high-level meeting hosted by H.E. President Dr. William Samoei Ruto.
The engagement reviewed the progress of higher education management in Kenya, particularly the transformation brought by the student-centered funding model. With the government’s increased budgetary allocation to public universities — rising from Ksh 44 billion in 2022 to Ksh 82 billion in 2025/2026 — institutions are steadily overcoming financial challenges.
For Tharaka University, the impact is already tangible. The institution proudly welcomed its largest-ever September 2025 intake, with over 5,000 first-year students under the new model. Both students and parents expressed satisfaction with the affordable structure, terming it a strong foundation for a smooth four-year academic journey. https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1EShmE5KGM/
President Ruto, during his earlier visit to TUN, emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring that all Kenyan students access quality and affordable education through the funding model.
Despite being a young university, Tharaka University continues to stand out nationally. It is ranked among the few government institutions with zero pending bills, has been named the second-best performing university in the country, and has also earned recognition through several other prestigious awards.
Tharaka University remains committed to its mission of shaping Kenya’s human capital through excellence, innovation, and accountability.
