Tharaka University (TUN) Computer Science and ICT students participated in the Karatina University GeniusLab Hackathon, where they emerged as Second Runners-Up, demonstrating exceptional innovation and technical excellence on a highly competitive platform.
Held from March 26th to 27th, 2026, the hackathon brought together some of the brightest minds in technology under the themes of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Cybersecurity and Ethical Hacking, and IoT and Robotics. Representing the University were the Horizons Hackers, a team of talented students from the Department of Computer Science and ICT, who showcased their creativity and problem-solving capabilities through innovative solutions.
During the competition, the team developed two cutting-edge AI-powered projects. The first, FloodEye, a disaster management system designed to provide real-time flood alerts and risk prediction, offering a digital solution to enhance safety and protect lives and property. The second, CyberLingua, is an advanced cybersecurity model developed to detect and neutralize phishing threats, contributing to safer and more secure digital ecosystems.
By integrating principles of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Cybersecurity, the Horizons Hackers demonstrated that TUN is at the forefront of leveraging technology to address real-world challenges. Their performance highlighted not only technical expertise but also the University’s commitment to nurturing innovation and practical skills among its students.
The students were accompanied by Dr. Ann Wambui and Mr. Joseph Mutwiri, lecturers from the ICT Department, who provided mentorship and support throughout the competition.
Congratulations to the team for flying the Tharaka flag high and making the University proud!
