TUN Leadership Concludes Strategic China Tour to Advance Smart Education Partnerships

Prof. Peter K. Muriungi, Ph.D., Vice-Chancellor & CEO, Tharaka University(TUN), together with Dr. Beatrice Muganda Inyangala, the PS, State Department for Higher Education and Research, other Vice-Chancellors and ICT Directors, recently completed a two-week tour in China aimed at strengthening collaboration, partnerships, staff and student mobility, and technology sharing in higher education.
The visit, held from January 4, 2026, took Prof. Muriungi and Dr. Ismael Kwenga, Chair of Department of Computer Science and Head of ICT at TUN, to Hangzhou, China, as part of a delegation organised by Hikvision. A key highlight was an official visit to Hikvision Headquarters, focused on advancing partnerships in smart technology to support teaching, learning, research, and innovation at Tharaka University. This engagement builds on the existing MoU between TUN and Hikvision and comes shortly after the University established a Technology Centre with smart classrooms fully equipped with Hikvision smart boards, cameras, and public address systems.
The delegation also participated in the Kenya–China Higher Education Smart Education Exchange Seminar and High-Quality International Student Recruitment Matching Meeting, which brought together university leaders from Kenya and China to discuss education modernisation and international cooperation. The programme included official meetings and a courtesy visit to the Vice President of Xidian University, Prof. Zhang Jincheng, where possible collaborations in joint programmes, research, and staff and student exchange were explored.
In the words of Prof. Peter K. Muriungi, Ph.D., the TUN Vice-Chancellor, the visit strengthened global networks, opened pathways for students to study in China and access scholarships, and provided valuable insights into smart education and university modernisation, supporting Tharaka University’s internationalisation agenda.
