Tharaka University (TUN) celebrated a proud and defining moment as students from the Department of Computer Science and ICT presented their trophies to the Vice-Chancellor & CEO, Prof. Peter. K. Muriungi, following their outstanding performance at the Karatina University GeniusLab Hackathon.

The presentation marked a significant milestone for the University, as the Horizons Hackers team was officially honored for securing the position of Second Runners-Up in the highly competitive event held from March 26th to 27th, 2026. In recognition of their remarkable achievement and participation in the competition, the team was also awarded and presented with a Certificate of Participation. In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor commended the students for their exceptional dedication, innovative thinking, and for representing the University with distinction on a national stage.

Participating in a hackathon that focused on critical and emerging fields—including Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Cybersecurity and Ethical Hacking, as well as IoT and Robotics—the team developed two impactful AI-driven solutions. FloodEye, a disaster management system, provides real-time flood alerts and predictive risk analysis to enhance community preparedness, while CyberLingua is an advanced cybersecurity model designed to detect and mitigate phishing threats with precision.
This accomplishment reflects the institution’s unwavering commitment to cultivating technical excellence, creativity, and problem-solving competencies among its students.
The team was accompanied by their mentors Dr. Ismael Kwenga, Chair of the Department of Computer Science, alongside Dr. Ann Wambui and Mr. Joseph Mutwiri from the ICT Department, whose guidance and support were instrumental throughout the competition.
