Public Lecture on the role of nutrition and sustainable food systems in addressing global food challenges.

Tharaka University is currently hosting Prof. Curtis R. Youngs, Morrill Professor of Animal Science at Iowa State University, USA, for a two-day academic visit aimed at strengthening knowledge exchange in agriculture and livestock production.
During his visit, Prof. Youngs, accompanied by the University Chancellor Prof. Emeritus Ratemo W. Michieka, toured various areas within and around the University to gain a deeper understanding of the institution’s agricultural initiatives and the surrounding community’s farming practices.
As part of the tour, Prof. Youngs visited a local homestead and surrounding farmland where he observed how different domesticated animals adapt and thrive within the local farming systems. The visit offered him first-hand insight into livestock rearing practices within the community, highlighting the role of smallholder farming in supporting food systems.
Led by Prof. Levi Musalia, Director of the Centre for Smart Agriculture, Prof. Youngs also toured the University farm where he interacted with several animal species reared at the institution.
These included Ankole and local cattle, pigs, goats, ostriches, and crocodiles, demonstrating the diversity of livestock production systems practiced at the University.
The visit provides a valuable opportunity for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and strengthening research in sustainable agriculture and livestock production.
As part of the program, Prof. Youngs is also scheduled to deliver a public lecture today at 2:00 PM to students, staff, and community members. The lecture titled “The Role of Animal-Source Foods in a Healthy Balanced Diet for Humans,” under the theme “Global Food Security and Sustainable Animal Production,” will explore how animal agriculture contributes to improved nutrition and global food security.
