Construction of TUN Hostels under the government’s Affordable Housing Programme.

Tharaka University (TUN) hosted officials from the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing, and Urban Development, State Department for Housing and Urban Development (SDHUD), for the official site handover to the contractor tasked with implementing the Construction of TUN’s Student Village and Accommodation.
Mr. Patrick Mwangi, Regional Lead, Eastern (SDHUD), who was leading the handing over, emphasized this as a key milestone in the government’s drive to expand affordable, quality student housing in public universities.
The TUN Vice-Chancellor and CEO, Prof. Peter K. Muriungi, who has been championing for this project, was represented by Prof. Collins Miruka, the Deputy Vice Chancellor – Administration, Finance, Planning & Development, who appreciated the government’s support, noting that the project will significantly boost on-campus accommodation capacity, providing modern, affordable, and quality housing for over ten percent of TUN students.
The project, valued at Kshs. 516,386,024.08 has been awarded to M/s Onecraft Construction Limited as the Contractor and Mutiso Menezes International as the Supervising Consortium. The development, intended to be done in 18 months, will feature a 14-storey building with a capacity of over 1,200 students and include modern amenities such as a mini-supermarket, shops, eateries, and student centers, designed to enhance the student experience and campus life.
This project follows the recent visit to Tharaka University by H.E. Dr William Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya, and H.E. Prof. Kithure Kindiki, Deputy President, during the commissioning of the University Tuition Complex, where the Head of State pledged to deliver student hostels to the University under the government’s Affordable Housing Programme.
