Tharaka University (TUN) Vice-Chancellor & CEO, Prof. Peter K. Muriungi, today led the University fraternity together with members of the local community in a tree-planting exercise at Mukothima Chief’s Camp.
This annual environmental initiative, held in collaboration with the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), saw over 5,000 tree seedlings planted and donated to community members. The exercise forms part of Tharaka University’s ongoing commitment to supporting the Presidential directive to grow 15 billion trees by 2032.
Prof. Muriungi, the Vice-Chancellor & CEO TUN, who was recently recognized nationally as an Environmental Hero by the National Heroes Council during Mashujaa Day 2025, reaffirmed the University’s dedication to environmental conservation. He emphasized that TUN will continue planting and nurturing trees both within the University and in surrounding communities to support ecosystem restoration and climate resilience in the region.

During the event, the Vice-Chancellor also took the opportunity to congratulate Humphrey Ombija – Mr. Tharaka University, for being crowned Mr. Environment Kenya (University Category), during the competition held at Kisumu, commending him for representing the institution with excellence and passion for environmental stewardship.
Speaking during the event, Sergeant Ali Hassan Ali of the Kenya Forest Service encouraged the community to take advantage of the rainy season and plant more trees, especially fruit trees, noting their importance in food security and reducing human–wildlife conflict.
The event was attended by senior University leadership, including Prof. Collins Miruka, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (AFP&D), Dr. Edward Kathuni, Registrar (A&P), Mr. Stephen Mavina, Tharaka South Deputy County Commissioner (DCC), alongside Deans, Directors, CoDs, HoDs, staff, students, and community members, all joining hands in this noble environmental course.
