Tharaka University Strengthens Community Impact Through Sodzo Benchmark

Tharaka University (TUN) continues to deepen its footprint in community-driven transformation through a strategic benchmarking visit to Sodzo International Kenya, an NGO based in Meru–Maua. The visit follows the recent signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between the two institutions, which paved the way for the establishment of the Flourishing Communities Model Centre (FCMC) at TUN. Located near the University Health Unit, the Centre positions the University as a hub for excellence in community-led development, participatory research, training, and digital innovation.

During the benchmark, TUN officials engaged directly with Sodzo’s grassroots initiatives, including the Kuja Pamoja Jamii (KJP) men and women groups in Igembe Central and Igembe North. The team also toured the Watoto wa Ahadi (“Children of Promise”) Rescue Center in Giika, a transformative initiative focused on rescuing street-connected children, providing rehabilitation, skills training, and ultimately reintegrating them into families, communities, and technical institutions. These engagements offered practical insights into sustainable,community-centered models that align with TUN’s vision.

The Flourishing Communities Model
Centre (FCMC) is set to play a pivotal role in strengthening family units and
enhancing community resilience across Tharaka and Chiakariga regions. Through
the KJP Program, the Centre will champion participatory approaches while
leveraging innovative digital tools to amplify community voices. Anchored
within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the FCMC will also serve
as a platform for interdisciplinary research, policy engagement,
capacity-building programs, and experiential learning opportunities for
students through internships and field placements.

TUN was represented by Prof. Mary Karuri (Dean, FHSS), Dr. Fidelis Ngugi -Dean, FPET, Dr. Lucy Kinanu -Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences, Dr. Linus Mugendi CoD Social Sciences, and Dr. Simon Ndwiga -Coordinator, FCMC. The Sodzo team included Christine Gatwiri
(Program Manager, Kuja Pamoja Kwa Jamii), Kelvin Munene Moses -Project Manager,
Watoto wa Ahadi, and Stanley Gitari, Country Director, Sodzo Kenya.
