Day Two of the Tharaka University Institutional Scientific Ethics Review Committee (TUN-ISREC) Research Ethics Training and Capacity-Building workshop focused on strengthening the Committee’s understanding of key principles that guide ethical and credible research.
The training, facilitated by experts from the National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI), led specialised sessions, among them Integrity in Research and Publication, Study Designs, and Informed Consent.
Ms. Christine Apakoreng, Deputy Director, Registration and Accreditation at NACOSTI, facilitated a session on Integrity in Research and Publication, focusing on the principles that promote responsible, credible and accountable research and scholarly publication.
Ms. Margaret Muthee, the Deputy Director, Social Science Schedule, took participants through Study Designs, equipping members with knowledge on different research approaches and considerations relevant to ethical review.
Ms. Charity Musembi, Senior Principal Scientist, facilitated a session on Informed Consent and Research Involving Vulnerable Populations, highlighting the importance of ensuring that research participants receive adequate information and voluntarily consent to participate in research while protecting the vulnerable parties.
The newly appointed members are accompanied by the Chairperson, Dr. Fidelis Ngugi, PhD, Dean FPET, and Dr. Dennis Obote, PhD, the secretariat of the committee, and also the Assistant Dean of Students
The training continues to enhance the Committee’s technical capacity and understanding of national research ethics requirements, strengthening its role in safeguarding research participants while promoting responsible and high-quality research at Tharaka University.
