Tharaka University Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) and Mukothima Centre today concluded a successful three-day first-year student orientation exercise. The final day of the orientation was marked by an inspiring keynote address from the University’s Vice Chancellor and CEO, Prof. Peter K. Muriungi.
He congratulated the pioneer cohort of students at the Mukothima TVET Centre and challenged them to be visionary, innovative, and solution-oriented.
He urged the students to embrace creativity and develop practical solutions to the challenges facing society.
“Pioneers suffer a lot, because the infrastructure is not fully developed, the road network is not that good, but it’s still a worthy cause. If you don’t pioneer, who else will pioneer? That’s why I’m very excited about the Mukothima Centre. I am an example of hope,” said Prof. Muriungi.
“We are here because we want you to succeed, and to succeed is not easy; it’s a design, it’s not by accident. You have to work hard and plan for it.”
“What you do in TVET, you integrate theory and practise. As the VC, I am your supporter in this journey if you come up with an innovation. TVET is at the centre of innovation and today. I want to announce that i will put up Sh1 million for students who innovate from Mukothima. We will then support you to go to China, Malaysia and anywhere else in the world.”
Mukothima TVET Centre Director, Dr. Faustin Muchui, expressed his appreciation to the University for the support extended towards the establishment and growth of the institute. He noted that the centre would play a significant role in enhancing access to education and skills training for the local community and the country at large.
“Today is a momentous day for everyone here at Mukothima Centre, we have finally kicked off this journey. I want to appreciate the University management for the continued support and pledge to make this a centre of excellence. We want to produce the next industry leaders from this TVET,” he said.
Tharaka University Registrar, Administration and Planning, Dr. Edward Kathuni, encouraged the pioneer students to become good ambassadors of the new centre.
He urged them to uphold the values of the University and contribute towards the growth, development, and prosperity of the centre.
“We are not just opening an institution, or a school or a centre, but it’s the beginning of a chapter in the educational, economic and social transformation of this area,” he said.
“There are other impacts that you will enjoy as a result, we start with a certificate or a diploma, and tomorrow we will have professors from this institution.”
University staff and representatives of the local community attended the event.
The successful completion of the orientation marks an important milestone in the establishment of Mukothima TVET Centre and its mission to expand access to quality technical and vocational education and training.
