Tharaka University’s 1st Edition Taekwondo Championship came to a successful conclusion today following an action-packed second day that saw adult competitors take to the mat for the highly anticipated semifinals and finals.
The opening day featured the children’s competitions. The second day brought together skilled adult athletes from different teams across Kenya, who competed in various weight categories, displaying impressive skill, discipline, resilience and sportsmanship.
Among the athletes who won were Samuel Onyango of Regionals, who topped the Fin Weight Men category, Phoebe Mwende of Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), who claimed first place in the Light Weight Ladies category, and Denis Omasava of Regionals, who won in the Light Weight Men category. In the Fly Ladies category, Faith Adhiambo secured first place, while Daniel Bokello of KDF took the top position in the Feather Weight Men category.
Tharaka University’s own athletes also made their mark, with Celestine Furaha finishing second in the Fin Ladies category and Veronica Wanjiku securing third place in the Fly Ladies category.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Peter K. Muriungi, who was present at the event, commended the athletes for their focus, determination and discipline—qualities he noted are essential not only in sports but also in developing responsible citizens.
He reaffirmed Tharaka University’s commitment to identifying, nurturing and supporting talent in sports and other areas of student development.
“We want our students to know that Tharaka University is not just about academics; we nurture talent in rugby, football and many other sports,” said Prof. Muriungi, while encouraging participants to be true ambassadors of the institution and uphold the University’s values and vision of excellence.
The Vice Chancellor warmly welcomed all players, coaches, officials and visitors to the University and officially declared the semifinals and finals open, setting the stage for an exciting conclusion to the inaugural tournament.
The championship culminated in a colourful medal and trophy presentation ceremony, where outstanding athletes and teams were recognised for their hard work, talent and perseverance.
Beyond the competition, the two-day event provided a platform for athletes to showcase their abilities, build friendships and networks, nurture emerging talent and contribute to the growth and promotion of Taekwondo within the region.
