Tharaka University today hosted a highly engaging and insightful online public lecture featuring Prof. Jennifer Vedolin, a distinguished Professor of Evolution and Conservation from Empire State University, USA. The session, held via Google Meet, brought together postgraduate students and staff members for an interactive engagement focused on strengthening research capacity and academic excellence.

The lecture was convened by Dr. Marciano Mutiga, Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences and Natural Resources(FLIN), with coordination support from Dr. Charles Nyabayo,TUN Lecturer of Ecology, who served as the link person for the session. The engagement forms part of the University’s ongoing efforts to expose its postgraduate community to global perspectives in research and scholarship.

Delivering her lecture under the theme “Navigating Postgraduate Research with Rigor and Relevance,” Prof. Vedolin challenged participants to rethink their approach to academic research. She encouraged students to view their theses not as final monuments of perfection, but as evolving platforms that grant them the freedom to ask deeper, more meaningful questions.

She emphasized that impactful research goes beyond academic fulfillment, urging students to focus on producing work that contributes to solving real-world problems while maintaining global scholarly standards. Prof. Vedolin further highlighted the importance of publishing research findings, engaging in scholarly collaborations, and building academic networks that extend beyond institutional and national boundaries.

The session involved a high level of interaction, with postgraduate students actively participating through questions and discussions. Key areas of interest included thesis development, navigating the academic publishing process, managing relationships with supervisors, and exploring career pathways both within and beyond academia.

Prof. Vedolin provided practical insights drawn from her vast experience, offering guidance on how students can overcome common research challenges, remain resilient throughout their academic journey, and position themselves competitively in the global research landscape.

The engagement had a significant impact on participants, leaving them motivated, better informed, and equipped with practical strategies to enhance their research output and academic growth. Students were encouraged to embrace curiosity, maintain consistency in their work, and pursue research that is both locally grounded and globally relevant.

This session highlights Tharaka University’s commitment to international academic collaborations and to connecting its students and staff with leading global scholars. By facilitating such engagements, the University continues to nurture a vibrant research culture anchored on innovation, relevance, and excellence.

As the University advances its postgraduate training agenda, such interactions remain vital in shaping well-rounded scholars capable of contributing meaningfully to both local development and the global knowledge economy.
