Tharaka University Red Cross Club members trained in emergency preparedness

Members of the Tharaka University (TUN) Red Cross Club participated in an intensive first-aid training session at Chuka University, facilitated by the Tharaka Nithi County Red Cross Branch. The TUN team was accompanied by their Club Patron, Dr. Patrick Kanampiu, Director of Quality Assurance at TUN.
The training underscores the importance of equipping students with practical life-saving skills and strengthening emergency preparedness within the University community.

It aimed to equip the trainees with essential knowledge and practical skills to respond effectively to emergencies and provide immediate assistance to casualties before professional medical help arrives.

The intensive learning experience covered a wide range of critical first-aid skills, including scene safety and casualty assessment, primary surveys, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), basic resuscitation, management of bleeding and wounds, and emergency response procedures.

The trainees also gained knowledge in managing fractures, sprains, dislocations, burns, choking, breathing difficulties, shock, seizures, fainting, poisoning, bites and stings. Additional training focused on the safe handling and transportation of casualties, reinforcing the importance of protecting the casualty and the first aider during emergencies.

Beyond acquiring technical skills, the training underscored a vital principle: in an emergency, the right knowledge and timely action can make the difference between life and death.
Through this initiative, the TUN Red Cross Club continues to strengthen a culture of preparedness, compassion, volunteerism and community service. The skills acquired will help position the trainees as a valuable first line of response during emergencies, contributing to a more disaster-ready, resilient and safer university community.

As Tharaka University continues to nurture responsible, service-oriented citizens, initiatives such as this demonstrate the value of empowering students with practical skills that extend beyond the classroom and make a meaningful difference in society.
At TUN, we are not just preparing students for the future; we are empowering them to protect lives today.
