TUN Staff Champion Environmental Conservation Through Community Clean-Up

At Tharaka University, commitment to environmental conservation continues to take center stage through meaningful community-driven initiatives. Recently, staff members drawn from the University’s games and sports teams took part in a clean-up exercise around the Runda area near the University main entrance—demonstrating a proactive approach to environmental stewardship.

The exercise focused on clearing waste materials that posed a risk of being washed into nearby water bodies or clogging drainage systems, especially during the ongoing rainy season. By addressing these hazards, the team not only enhanced the cleanliness of the surrounding environment but also contributed to preventing potential flooding and pollution.

This initiative reflected a strong sense of unity and shared responsibility among staff, reinforcing the University’s dedication to conserving the environment both within and beyond its premises. Led by CPA Elijah Karonco-Deputy Finance Officer, and patron of the staff games and sports teams, participants expressed satisfaction in the impact of their efforts and the collective spirit that drove the activity.

The day’s engagement extended beyond environmental action into community interaction. Later in the evening, the University’s football team held a friendly match with the Marimanti Veterans, creating an opportunity to connect with the local community. Alongside the match, conversations centered on the importance of environmental conservation, highlighting how sports can serve as a platform for awareness and advocacy.

Through such initiatives, Tharaka University continues to position itself as an institution that values community engagement, environmental responsibility, and holistic development—blending sustainability efforts with talent nurturing and social connection.
