Tharaka University Students Explore the Future of Smart Cities at Konza Technopolis

Innovation met opportunity as second-year students from Information Technology (IT), Computer Science, ICT, and related computing programmes at Tharaka University undertook an enriching academic and industry exposure visit to Konza Technopolis Development Authority (KoTDA), Kenya’s premier Smart City, as part of their ongoing Internal Attachment Programme.

The educational visit forms part of the University’s commitment to bridging classroom learning with practical industry experience and is further strengthened by the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed earlier this year between Tharaka University and Konza Technopolis Development Authority (KoTDA). The partnership, spearheaded by Tharaka University Vice Chancellor/CEO Prof. Peter K. Muriungi, PhD, seeks to promote collaboration in research, innovation, technology transfer, student training, and capacity building.

Throughout the visit, the students gained first-hand exposure to cutting-edge technologies driving Kenya’s digital transformation. They toured key facilities within Konza Technopolis, including the Konza National Data Center, Experience Centre, Waste Water Reclamation Facility, and other smart infrastructure that demonstrates how technology is transforming governance, environmental sustainability, and service delivery.

The learners were introduced to emerging technologies shaping the future of the ICT industry, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning, Internet of Things (IoT), Smart City Management, Data Centre Operations, Digital Infrastructure, and Intelligent Systems. These practical engagements enabled the students to connect theoretical concepts acquired in class with real-world technological applications.

A major highlight of the visit was the interaction with experienced industry professionals and technology experts, who shared valuable insights on current industry trends, innovation ecosystems, career pathways, entrepreneurship, and the competencies required to thrive in the rapidly evolving digital economy. The mentorship sessions challenged the students to embrace innovation, continuous learning, and research as they prepare for careers in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The academic visit underscores Tharaka University’s commitment to producing graduates equipped with industry-relevant skills through experiential learning, strategic partnerships, and exposure to world-class innovation ecosystems.

The students were accompanied by Mr. Misheck Murimi, Assistant Lecturer in Information Technology, and Ms. Esther Wambui, Assistant Lecturer in Information and Communication Technology, who guided and supervised the educational tour.

At Tharaka University, learning goes beyond the classroom—empowering students with practical experiences, industry networks, and innovation-driven knowledge that prepares them to become the next generation of technology leaders.
