Tharaka University (TUN) has reaffirmed its commitment to academic excellence by conducting its 7th Pedagogy Training for all teaching staff, aimed at strengthening the implementation of Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET).
The training was led by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic, Research and Student Affairs), Prof. Veronicah Nyagah, and presided over by Dr. Joseph Kirugua, Dean, Faculty of Education. It brought together all Deans from the University’s faculties, along with their respective teaching staff.
The workshop focused on sensitizing and preparing academic staff on the CBET Retooling Model Prototype, with particular emphasis on applying the CBET prototype through backward design. This approach enables lecturers to align learning outcomes, teaching strategies, and assessment methods to ensure programmes are competency-based and responsive to industry and societal needs.
To reinforce the concepts covered, participants took part in an interactive breakout session, divided into groups. Each group engaged in a hands-on exercise, applying the CBET backward design approach before presenting their work for peer review. The session concluded with participants constructively critiquing one another’s work, fostering collaborative learning, the exchange of ideas, and continuous improvement in curriculum design.
The program also serves as a critical platform for reviewing and developing academic programs to ensure full compliance with CBET requirements.
Through such capacity-building initiatives, TUN continues to strengthen its academic standards, equip its staff with innovative pedagogical approaches, and advance its mission of producing competent, skilled, and globally competitive graduates.
