Tharaka University Vice-Chancellor and CEO, Prof. Peter K. Muriungi, PhD, received Mr. Kevin Tuei, Director of Open, Distance and e-Learning (ODeL), during a courtesy visit in which Mr. Tuei presented the prestigious Huawei ICT Competition 2025–2026 Overall Grand Prize medal that he earned as a member of Team Kenya at the Huawei ICT Competition 2025–2026 Global Finals held in Shenzhen, China.
The courtesy presentation provided an opportunity for the University to celebrate Kenya’s historic achievement and recognize Tharaka University’s role in fostering innovation, digital skills, and an enabling learning environment that empowered Mr. Tuei to compete successfully on the global stage.
Team Kenya emerged as the Overall Grand Prize Winner at the Huawei ICT Competition 2025–2026 Global Finals, marking Kenya’s first time receiving the competition’s highest honour. The team impressed judges with exceptional technical expertise, innovation, teamwork, and problem-solving skills, underscoring the country’s growing strength in ICT innovation and digital talent.
Mr. Tuei represented Tharaka University alongside Catherine Atieno of JKUAT, Brian Ngugi Kamau of Mount Kenya University and Salem Kim of Machakos University in securing the landmark victory, bringing immense pride to Kenya and the African continent.
Speaking during the courtesy visit, Mr. Tuei expressed his gratitude to Tharaka University for providing a practical, innovation-driven learning environment that enabled him to excel on the international stage. He encouraged students to seize opportunities in technology, innovation, and research, emphasizing that commitment, continuous learning, and collaboration can open doors to global success.
Prof. Muriungi congratulated Mr. Tuei and the entire Team Kenya for their remarkable achievement in flying the Kenyan flag high on the global ICT stage. He commended Mr. Tuei for serving as an inspiration to the University community and reaffirmed Tharaka University’s commitment to nurturing innovation, strengthening digital competencies, and producing graduates who are globally competitive and equipped with industry-relevant skills.
The Vice-Chancellor noted that the achievement reflects the University’s continued investment in quality teaching, modern ICT infrastructure, experiential learning, and strategic industry partnerships that prepare students and staff to solve real-world challenges through technology and innovation.
