Tharaka University (TUN) has marked a significant milestone in its digital transformation journey by commencing a five-day Module Development & Capacity Building Workshop to fully onboard its academic programmes to the Open, Distance and e-Learning (ODeL) mode of study
The workshop, officially opened by the Vice Chancellor and CEO, Prof. Peter K. Muriungi, PhD, brings together academic staff at the African Institute for Capacity Development (AICAD) for intensive, hands-on training facilitated by experienced ODeL experts. The programme is designed to equip lecturers with practical skills in online module development, instructional design, and effective delivery through the Moodle Learning Management System (LMS).
In his opening remarks, Prof. Muriungi reaffirmed the University’s commitment to leveraging technology to expand access to quality and affordable education. He noted that ODeL will empower learners to study at their own pace, regardless of geographical location or time constraints, allowing students to access learning materials, undertake assessments, and complete Continuous Assessment Tests (CATs) at their convenience.
“Education should not be limited by space and time. Through ODeL, we are creating opportunities for learners to access quality learning materials wherever they are, whenever they need them,” the Vice Chancellor remarked.
Prof. Muriungi further challenged members of staff to embrace digital transformation across the University’s core mandates of teaching, research, community outreach and institutional operations. He underscored that adopting innovative learning technologies will enhance the University’s competitiveness while calling for the responsible and ethical integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into teaching and learning.
The workshop, organised by the Directorate of Open and Distance e-Learning (ODeL), underscores Tharaka University’s unwavering commitment to innovation, academic excellence and inclusive education, positioning the institution at the forefront of delivering flexible, technology-driven learning experiences for the 21st-century learner.
