Tharaka University (TUN) has lauded the installation of Prof. Kivutha Kibwana as the Chancellor of the International Leadership University (ILU).
Tharaka University Vice Chancellor/CEO, Prof. Peter K. Muriungi, joined the International Leadership University (ILU) community in celebrating the installation of Prof. Kibwana as the institution’s third Chancellor.
“Prof. Kivutha Kibwana’s journey as a scholar, legal expert, public servant and champion of good governance is a testament to transformative leadership. His installation as Chancellor of International Leadership University is a significant milestone, and we wish him great success in this important responsibility,” he said.
Prof. Muriungi attended the installation ceremony at the ILU Kitengela campus.

Prof. Kibwana, an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, Certified Secretary and Professor of Law, brings extensive experience in academia, constitutional reform, governance, public service and leadership.
His distinguished career includes teaching law at the University of Nairobi, where he rose to become Dean of the Faculty of Law and Associate Professor. He has also served as Makueni MP, Cabinet Minister, Presidential Adviser and Governor of Makueni County for two terms from 2013 to 2022.
Prof. Kibwana also served as President of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP12), held in Nairobi in 2006, and has played a significant role in Kenya’s constitutional reform and governance.
Congratulating Prof. Kibwana, Prof. Muriungi described him as an accomplished scholar and statesman whose wealth of experience would contribute significantly to ILU’s growth.
He added that Prof. Kibwana’s experience in education, law and public service would strengthen ILU’s pursuit of excellence in higher education and leadership development.

Prof. Kibwana has received several awards and recognitions for his contribution to public service, constitutional reform and volunteerism, including the International Commission of Jurists Outstanding Public Servant/Game Changer Award in 2019.
The occasion also highlighted the strong institutional links between TUN and ILU. ILU Vice Chancellor Prof. Timothy M. Kiruhi previously served as the founding Chair of the Tharaka University Council, playing an important role in the University’s governance and institutional development.
Prof. Muriungi’s participation in the ceremony underscores Tharaka University’s continued engagement with institutions and leaders committed to advancing education, ethical leadership and service to society.
