Tharaka University (TUN) recently hosted pupils from Kabuabua Junior School in Mukothima Sub-County, Tharaka Nithi County, for an academic and experiential learning visit to the University.
The visit was facilitated by Mr. Ian Yegon, a third-year Tharaka University student currently undertaking his teaching practice at Kabuabua Junior School. The pupils had an opportunity to tour the University’s Tech Centre and experience its state-of-the-art smart classrooms, where they interacted with the interactive smartboards used in teaching and learning at the institution.
Through hands-on demonstrations, the pupils explored how advanced educational technologies can make learning more engaging, interactive, and effective. Using the smartboards, they watched educational videos explaining scientific concepts such as photosynthesis and modes of nutrition, gaining a practical appreciation of how technology enhances classroom instruction.
The pupils also discovered the versatility of the smartboards by interacting with built-in musical instruments such as keyboards. This demonstrated how digital learning tools can support the teaching of diverse subjects, including music, which forms an important component of Kenya’s Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
Accompanying teacher Madam Doris expressed her gratitude to Tharaka University for providing the pupils with the opportunity to experience a modern learning environment. She also showcased her artistic skills by drawing on the smartboard, an activity that delighted and inspired her pupils while highlighting how technology can enrich the learner-teacher experience and improve educational outcomes.
The academic tour served as both an eye-opener and a source of inspiration for the young learners, many of whom expressed their aspiration to pursue higher education at Tharaka University in the future. Beyond exposing the pupils to cutting-edge educational technologies, the visit underscored the University’s commitment to nurturing future generations through community engagement and educational outreach.
