Tharaka University Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Research and Student Affairs, Prof. Veronica Nyaga, has welcomed the 2026 first-year students to the University as she closed the first day of the ongoing orientation programme.
Prof. Nyaga urged the students to embrace University life with responsibility and take advantage of the opportunities and support systems available to help them navigate their academic and personal journeys.
She cited the mentorship programme, which supports student welfare. She encouraged the first-year students to seek guidance and assistance whenever they encounter challenges during their stay at the University.
The first day of the orientation programme brought together various University officials and facilitators who took the students through essential aspects of campus life. They equipped the students with information to help them settle into the University and make informed decisions throughout their studies.
Dr. Edward Kathuni, Registrar, Administration, Finance &Planning , outlined the range of services available to support students and facilitate the smooth running of the University, including accommodation, catering, transport, health services, security and university enterprises.
He also revealed that the University is plans to acquire additional buses to enhance student mobility within and beyond the campus.
Dr. David Mwangi, the Registrar Academic Affairs, guided the students on the academic expectations of university life and highlighted opportunities available to students.
Dr. Shadrack Munanu, the Dean of Students, together with his deputy, Dr. Denis Obote, introduced the students to the mandate and services of the Office of the Dean of Students, emphasising the various avenues available to support their welfare and overall wellbeing.
The Finance Department, represented by Deputy Finance Officer Elijah Karonco, sensitised the students on financial matters, while Dr. Ismael Kwenga, the Chairperson ICT, highlighted the role of information and communication technology in enhancing teaching, learning and other aspects of University life.
Representing the student body, TUSA Chairperson, Mr. Kennedy Mwaniki, introduced the student leadership and explained how they can engage their representatives and seek assistance on issues affecting them.
The orientation also addressed the social and personal dimensions of university life.
Guest facilitator, Dr. Francis Gacheru of Chuka University, spoke to the students on healthy relationships, sexuality and deviance, while Prof. Stephen Mutua of Meru University of Science and Technology spoke about life on campus and personal finance.
Other facilitators included Mrs. Maureen Mwiti from the Office of Career Services, who reiterated the importance of career preparation; Dr. David Kiptui from the Board of Undergraduate Studies and Field Attachment; and Dr. Alex Muthengi from the Directorate of Research, Publications and Extension.
The day concluded with a session on Counselling Services and the Mentorship Programme, facilitated by Prof. Nyaga, Dr. Munanu and student counsellors. The session reinforced the University’s commitment to ensuring that students receive the guidance and support they need inside and outside the classroom.
On Friday, September 4, 2026, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter K. Muriungi, will formally welcome the 2026 first-year cohort into the Tharaka University community.
