TUN Champions Cultural Preservation at The Ongoing Tharaka Cultural Celebrations

Tharaka University joined community members, cultural stakeholders and education partners at the Marimanti Nyangumi Stadium for the ongoing Tharaka Cultural Celebrations being held from 21st to 23rd May 2026 in commemoration of the annual World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development.

The colourful event, organized by Kambugumo CBO in conjunction with Tharaka University, has brought together local leaders, cultural performers, youth groups, schools and members of the public in celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the Tharaka people.

Speaking during today’s celebrations, Dr. Patrick Kanampiu, Lecturer in Linguistics at Tharaka University, who represented the Vice Chancellor/CEO, Prof. Peter K. Muriungi, emphasized the importance of preserving indigenous languages and cultural practices as a way of safeguarding societal identity, unity and pride.

Dr. Kanampiu noted that communities should deliberately preserve and promote the positive aspects of their culture through modern platforms and public engagement. He observed that for indigenous cultures to survive in the contemporary world, they must strategically blend with modernity rather than isolate themselves from ongoing social and technological changes.

He further stressed that cultural celebrations should be organized in a dignified and structured manner that encourages parents and schools to comfortably allow children and students to participate in cultural activities and learn their heritage.

Dr. Kanampiu also called upon the local community to continue supporting Tharaka University under the leadership of Prof. Peter K. Muriungi. He praised the university for its rapid growth and expanding academic profile, noting that the institution is currently offering competitive programmes such as Nursing, Clinical Medicine and Law.

The three-day celebration continues with traditional dances, cultural exhibitions, indigenous cuisine, storytelling sessions and discussions on cultural preservation among younger generations, reflecting Tharaka University’s commitment through such partnerships in promoting culture, education and social cohesion.
