Tharaka University (TUN) successfully hosted a three-day Council and Management Retreat at Lake Naivasha Resort from 27th to 29th May 2026, bringing together the University Council led by Council Chairman Prof. Peter Keiyoro, alongside Dr. Jemimah Onsare, Ms. Isabel Joy Ochieng, Ms. Christine Nanjala, Mr. Issa Mohamed Ahmed, Ms. Edita Wambeti Njue, Mr. Thuranira Thimangu, Ms. Ruth Charity Wanyonyi, Mr. Emmanuel Bore Ng’etuny,Vice-Chancellor Prof. Peter K. Muriungi and members of University Management Board, Deans and Directors. The retreat provided a strategic platform for strengthening governance, accountability, leadership, and institutional sustainability while fostering collaboration between the Council and Management in advancing the University’s vision and mission.
Facilitated by experts; Dr. Constantine Barasa and Dr. Jack Wasonga from the Public Sector Accounting Standards Board (PSASB), participants engaged in intensive sessions covering effective governance and oversight in public universities, corporate strategy and performance management, financial oversight and accountability, and effective risk oversight. The discussions highlighted best practices in university governance and emphasized the importance of strategic leadership in achieving institutional goals.
The retreat further explored the critical role of internal audit functions, resource mobilization, and financial sustainability, equipping participants with practical approaches to enhancing operational efficiency and ensuring long-term institutional resilience. Interactive question-and-answer sessions enabled participants to exchange experiences and gain practical insights into emerging governance and management challenges within the higher education sector.
Sessions focused on the future of university boards, examining how technology and innovation can be leveraged to enhance governance excellence. Participants also deliberated on corporate culture and strategic change management, recognizing the need for adaptive leadership and transformative organizational cultures in an evolving educational environment.
Discussions featured on leading inter-generational teams, talent management, and succession planning, underscoring the importance of nurturing future leaders and building sustainable institutional capacity. The retreat concluded with reflections on the way forward and renewed commitments towards strengthening governance structures and advancing the University’s strategic agenda.
