Tharaka University (TUN) successfully concluded its participation in the National Productivity and Performance Conference 2026 held at the Kenya School of Government, Nairobi, with a remarkable achievement after being recognized as the Best Performing Public University in Kenya and emerging 1st Runners-Up in the Best Performing State Corporation Category.
The three-day conference, organized by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) under the theme “Productivity for Fiscal Sustainability and Efficient Service Delivery,” brought together leaders from government, academia, the private sector, development partners, and public institutions to explore strategies for enhancing productivity, accountability, and performance across the country.
Day Three focused on policy, legislative, and institutional reforms necessary for driving productivity and strengthening public sector performance. The day’s sessions commenced with keynote addresses on Driving Productivity and Performance through Legislative Reform and Policy Coherence in the Public Sector, delivered by the Speaker of the Senate, Rt. Hon. Amason Kingi. The speakers emphasized the critical role of legislative frameworks and policy alignment in fostering an efficient, accountable, and productive public service.
A key highlight of the day was the presentation of the Public Service Performance Contracting and Productivity Evaluation Reports for the Financial Year 2024/2025 by H.E. Dr. William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces. The reports recognized outstanding institutions that had demonstrated excellence in performance, service delivery, governance, and prudent utilization of resources.
During the awards ceremony, Tharaka University emerged as the Best Performing Public University in Kenya with a composite score of 1.8554. The University was also ranked second overall among all State Corporations nationally, earning the prestigious 1st Runners-Up position in the Best Performing State Corporation Category.
The recognition reflects the University’s commitment to excellence in teaching, research, innovation, community engagement, governance, and financial stewardship. It further affirms the effectiveness of the University’s strategic focus on quality service delivery, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Receiving the award on behalf of the University, the Tharaka University delegation, led by Council Chair Prof. Peter N. Keiyoro, PhD and Vice Chancellor/CEO Prof. Peter K. Muriungi, PhD, celebrated the achievement as a testament to the collective efforts of the University Council, Management, staff, students, alumni, and stakeholders.
As the conference came to a close, participants reaffirmed the need for institutions to embrace productivity as a cornerstone of fiscal sustainability, efficient service delivery, and national development. Tharaka University remains committed to upholding these principles as it continues to strengthen its position as a centre of excellence in higher education, research, innovation, and community service.
